Uttarakhand Announces Trek of the Year 2025: Chinap Valley, Gulabi Kantha & Bankatiya Glacier

Dehradun: In a major push for winter and offbeat trekking, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board has declared Chinap Valley (Chamoli), Gulabi Kantha (Uttarkashi), and Bankatiya Glacier (Pithoragarh) as “Trek of the Year 2025.” The move aims to highlight untouched Himalayan landscapes while spreading tourist footfall beyond overcrowded trails.

Why These Treks Matter

The three routes represent different regions of Uttarakhand and are being promoted for their natural beauty, winter trekking potential, and community-based tourism value.

  • Chinap Valley, Chamoli: Known for quiet valleys and scenic Himalayan views, emerging as a peaceful winter trekking destination.
  • Gulabi Kantha, Uttarkashi: A popular winter trek through alpine meadows, officially flagged off in September 2025, marking the start of the season.
  • Bankatiya Glacier, Pithoragarh: A high-altitude glacier trek showcasing eastern Uttarakhand’s dramatic terrain.

What’s New for Trekkers in 2025

  • Online permits introduced for the Valley of Flowers, making access easier for the upcoming season.
  • Pulna–Bhyundar road under development, expected to shorten the trek to Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib by around 7 km.
  • Popular treks like Har Ki Dun, Buran Ghati, and Aanchal Top are running smoothly, with operators reporting successful early-season ascents.

Safety & Winter Travel Advisory

Officials advise trekkers to stay alert during high-altitude and winter treks, as weather conditions can change quickly. Travellers are encouraged to follow official updates, choose experienced operators, and prepare for cold and snow conditions.

A Bigger Tourism Push

The Trek of the Year announcement is part of Uttarakhand’s wider strategy to promote year-round adventure tourism. Recently, the state also hosted the first Adi Kailash Circuit Marathon, signalling a growing focus on adventure and eco-tourism.

Why it matters:

By spotlighting Chinap Valley, Gulabi Kantha, and Bankatiya Glacier, Uttarakhand is positioning itself as India’s leading destination for winter trekking and offbeat Himalayan adventures while creating new opportunities for local communities.
